At Home Educational Activities for School Aged Children and Families
Educational games and activities for school aged children in self-isolation, house lockdown and quarantine for coronavirus (COVID-19)
If, like the rest of the world, you're in quarantine or self-isolation at home with your family, it's likely that your children may be missing some educational benefits from school.
We've come up with some ideas to help fill the educational gap for teenagers, high-schoolers and secondary-schoolers stuck in quarantine or home isolation social distancing.
Quick Inspiration
- Read books
- Make your own science project
- Learn something new
- Learn to sew or knit
- Learn origami
- Start learning a new language
- Do mind puzzles and brain teasers
- Write a fictional story
- Make a lego video
Cook-off
Although you'll want to be careful rationing out your precious ingredients, this could be a fun and educational way to spend time with your school aged kids. Giving them an opportunity to test out their cooking skills and cook you dinner at the same time!
Bubble Gum Blowing Contest
If you've got a good supply of chewing gum at the ready, then give your kids this challenge. See who can blow the biggest bubble from a piece of gum, then make it educational by figuring out how bubble gum is made and how bubbles work
Poetry Jumble
An interesting poetry based challenge that is sure to get the brain-juices flowing for your family.
Who Am I?
The concept of this game is simple - write some things down about yourself and have a parent read them out anonymously and see if others can guess who's who. This will work best with a bigger family.
Celebrity Head Mania
Learn more about historical figures by playing a game of celebrity heads. Find out what history units your children have been studying at school recently, then pick some key figures and see if they can ask good questions to work out who they might be. Or flip the game around and read out simple facts about the famous person, and see if your children can guess who it is.
Create A Commercial
Turn the topic to media and marketing and see if your kids creative-side can start to shine. Get them to create a commercial for a random object (with some restrictions and rules) and see what they come up with. Could be done using a phone camera or just performed as a drama.
