An active, camp, circle, no prep game

Also known as: Bang

How To Play Hey

14 Jan 2022 - This is an updated version of "Bang!"

Get everyone to stand in a circle facing inwards. The leader running the game will need to stand in the middle of the circle. The leader points at someone in the circle. That person must duck down straight away and the two people either side of them must turn to face each other, hold their hands/palms together pointing at the other person and say/yell "hey". All this needs to happen as quickly as possible.

Whoever does this first stays in and the slower person is out. Also, if the person who gets pointed at originally doesn't duck down quick enough, then they are out. If they do duck down quickly, then whoever says "hey" first out of the two people either side of them stays in and the other person is out.

When there are only two people left, they stand back to back, and the person who was in the middle starts counting. With each count the two people take steps away from each other, western style. The person who was in the middle then yells "go", and the two people turn, complete the hand action and say "hey". The person who is fastest wins, and gets to be in the middle the next round.

This is a super fun youth group game that needs to no extra materials and is easy to explain and get the hang of. Kids might want to play a few rounds so they can get a second chance if they get out really quickly.

For the leader running the game, after a few turns they might want to make their pointing a bit trickier by looking away or spinning in a circle. Be creative!

You can turn this into a "get to know you game" by following these instructions.
You can also use it as a simple twist on a pop quiz by following these instructions.

If you play with water pistols you can play this game :)

Sounds like a terrible idea to have any group of people pretend to shoot each other with hand guns, let alone a YOUTH group. This is ridiculous. As seen on a previous comment, "zap" or "squirt" may be a better choice, but I would suggest not doing this activity AT ALL in any type of professional setting - school or not.

Could use "Zap" instead :)

We play this game too but we call it Squirt. Basically instead of yelling bang, the kids yell squirt. There is also a name version where the person in the middle point to a person, they duck down and the two people beside the one ducked down race to say the other person's name first. The one who says it first wins, and the other becomes out. It's a great and fun name game for the first day!

You could easier call it something g else, like FIZZ POP the person in the middle points to a person in the circle and says Fizz and that person ducks and the people on either side have says 'pop' and claps. First pop wins!! Or if you are playing with younger kids, you could do Snap (person in middle)Crackle (person who ducks) Pop (people on either side of crackle)

Raquel, maybe you could do the spider man web action. Or no action, just say the other person's name

This does sound like a fun game but the down side its encouraging guns! In my youth program games consisting "guns" is not OK!, same goes for schools!

This is a great ESL activity. Give every person in the group a new 'name'. Maybe an animal or fruit or adjective. The person who gets 'shot' is never in play. The two people beside that person must point at each other and say the person's new 'name' (not the word 'bang'). The first to say it correctly is the winner. This can be made more entertaining by assigning an animal noise. So instead of pointing and saying the name, they point and say the animal noise and the animal name.

To extend the speaking further require the players to say 'He is a [name]'. For example, if you are using fruit as names the players must say 'He is an apple'. Be strict and make sure the sentence is said fully. That sentence can be made longer and longer - 'I think you are an apple' or 'You really look like an apple to me'.

To keep people in the game for longer allocate tokens to each person (eg playing cards). When a person gets shot or makes a mistake remove one token. Finish the game whenever you want and decide the winner based on the number of tokens they have left. If there is a tie total the value on the cards.

I think there's a version on this where the person in the middle can ask a mathematical sum before pointing at someone. And then the people either side of the person who was pointed at have to give the answer to the sum before saying "BANG!"

I remember playing this in primary school when learning multiplication.
