Top ten messy food games

Food games are fun and creative - especially when they're messy. We've picked our top ten messy food games so you can ensure you play the games that are going to cause the most mess and make the most fun!

We've judged our favourite messy food games based not just on how much of a mess they make, but also things like pay-off (does it take a really long time to set up but the game doesn't last very long), creativity (is it a game that's different from the norm) and use of food (how well the game uses food - could it be played without food to the same effect). If you're ever looking to set up a really fun themed night for your youth group then a "Messy Food Games" night is the way to go and choosing a few of our favourites would be a great place to start.

10. State the Cheese

Possibly the least messy of this entire list. State The Cheese works well for a quiz night round as it tests knowledge, creativity and chomping skills.

9. Gum Boot Goop

Falls into a similar league as Porridge Pants (mentioned above). Impossible questions, canned food, gumboots, an obstacle course relay and, of course, a banana! Another messy food game which should create a whole lot of chaos and mess and potentially finish up in a food fight.

8. Rice Model Competition

Another good messy food game to get the creative juices flowing. Each team gets a cup of rice which they must mould into something. This game wins points for easy setup and cleanup, as well as being really cheap!

7. Porridge Pants

Good memories is what this game creates, along with a whole lot of mess. Must be played outside in my opinion. And you don't have to stop at porridge - any cheap, squelchy food could work really well!

6. Extreme Cake Decorating

This is a really good team building game which allows the creative kids an opportuntity to shine. Could be used as a MasterChef challenge as well. If you want to keep things cheapd and quick, the key is to get pre-made sponge cakes from your local supermaket and buy a stack of cheap icing/frosting, lollies and decorations - then leave the rest up to the kids. If you've got more time to spare, then let the players make their own cakes from scratch.

5. Dirty Nappies

I think this is a good messy food game for a baby shower. Involves sniffing different brown foods which have been setup in nappies. It looks disgusting, and depending on what you put in the nappies, can range from delicious (nutella) to disgusting (dog food). So if you're in need of baby shower games or youth group games - this is the game for you!

4. Blend It

I love the concept of this game... but the funny thing is that I've never yet played it. However I plan to play it very soon. A great, simple food eating competition with a sly twist which should provide plenty of laughs.

3. Chocolate Game

Although not really messy at all, this food game is an absolute all-time classic. Acts as a great ice breaker and would work well as the first game in a series of food games - just to get people warmed up. Kids love chocolate and therefore, they'll love this game.

2. Mr Whippy

Another really messy one to begin with. One player lies down on the ground with an ice-cream cone in their mouth while the rest of team relays back and fourth with a spoon full of ice-cream (and other ingredients) to build the ice-cream cone. Once it's complete, the player has to eat the entire ice-cream cone without using their hands. Can also add in a judge who will compare all the ice-cream cones to see which one is the best looking. Definitely a game to play outside and in hot weather (so ice-cream will melt over the player's face)!

1. Messy Twister

My favourite messy food game is naturally one of the messiest games of them all. Takes the classic game of "twister" and puts a food twist on it. The best part about this game is that it almost always ends up in some sort of food fight with people throwing different paper plates of food at each other. Be sure to place the paper plates at a tough distance away from each other so the players have plenty of trouble staying upright!
