An active mini-olympics duel game for small groups

How To Play Sock Wrestling

Materials Needed

Everyone is to have socks on and no shoes. They are to stand inside a designated area, and when a leader says go, they all must wrestle each other to get thier socks of.

We call this 'Sock Off' where I'm from and it is a HUGE deal at camp!! The game has really become an annual tournament. We had to ban skinny jeans because some of us would wear knee and even thigh length socks under skinny jeans and make it almost impossible to get off. Usually those socks would just end up getting ripped. So we created the rule that your pant leg has to be able to be pulled up above the top of the sock, and everyone shows their socks before the round begins. I also agree about separating genders and even ages to keep injuries and awkward touching to a minimum. Injuries do happen, especially when play gets intense and competitive, but I've yet to see anyone paralyzed or dead. If you're playing this at camp, be sure to have a 'Counselors Round'. Your kids will love cheering for their leaders!

I play this game all the time at my camp. We get the kids (senior campers) to put their mattresses on the floor (after lights out!) and they battle it out. Lots of fun!

This is an absolute favorite in our youth group in Australia!! I always worry a bit when we have visiting youth though...regular's parents are pretty okay with a scratch or two (this is a country town we're talking about by the way!) but it can be a little dangerous once they know what's going on and really get into it. We have had a few injuries. We invested in a big bag of socks- that's how dedicated we are to the sock wrestling!! I would advise that you consider separating into girl/boy groups depending on the dynamics of the youth group- it is very physical so may cause unneeded 'feelings' with guys grabbing girls legs to wrestle off socks, etc! But it depends on the youth group whether this would be necessary :) SUPER fun...but have a first aid kit handy :) :)

We've done this a couple of times at youth retreats (and my dorm used to do it in college). We turn it into a big event, put mattresses on the floor and tie rope around the edges to make a "ring". They have socks on both their hands and feet and we do 1 minute rounds - person w/most socks on at end of round advances. We have a guys division and a girls division with both singles and doubles in each. Lots of fun!

This game as fantastic! We played it the other night and it was a big hit. All the boy's just love it and you would be hard pressed to get the girls out of it either. Rippa! PS. this game is that fine tuned, i think it must have been around since Adam and Eve.

Love the detergent idea- i get my kids to play this game, but with all my dirty washing. Saves on housework!

This is also really fun if you can take one of the youth aside ahead of time, and have them slip a small coin or candy (not that you'd want to eat it afterwards), or anything small into one of their socks without telling the others. Then, you tell them that they not only need to get everyone else's socks off, but the winner is the one who finds the coin! Basically it just adds to the chaos! :)

A good variation is to get some orange buildes plastic, squeeze on 2 litres of detergent and add a bucket of water. It makes sock wrestling a little slippery and messy but a whole lot more fun.

Actually, I believe Peter invented this game when he got sick of Andrew, Judas & the other boy's stinky socks, and tried to throw them into the Sea of Galilee.

Yes, we had a youth leader who introduced this game and we had lots of fun playing it. Somehow we never sustained major injuries either.
